Do tilting steering columns count as collapsible? Because Ford implemented collapsible steering columns for safety in 1968, so my car doesn’t have that, but it does have an unusual-for-the-time tilting steering column which means there is a joint in there... Does that count? I think I’ve heard the Thunderbird’s tilting steering column reduced risk of impalement by bending and deflecting the driver, but does that actually work? Is that the same thing or similar enough? Or will that just impale me at an angle? I mean I know it’s a bit silly to freak out about safety features on a car from the mid sixties, but... What’s the risk of Phoebe impaling me?

In a head-on that’s high-energy enough to worry about impalement? I’m wondering if impalement was just a gory cherry on top for what would otherwise be death anyway.

I don’t know about your car but on modern columns they are two separate part of the column and it can be one of the thing and not the other.

The safer columns normally have a two piece shaft in the engine compartment that will slide inside itself in a crash. I would think a column that tilts b ut isn’t designed to squish would do approximately jack shit in a wreck.

The collapsible columns either look like an accordion or have a sliding shaft like snowman stated, should be easy enough to see under the dash.

You ded.
hm, now you got me worrying about my 87 E30. Not just the steering column but everything else, crumple zones, low weight, etc.

I like seat belts! They have actually saved me a couple of times.
